Just a few quick tips to keep in mind when you are going to a PET adoption event.
Thinking about adopting, or just going to an event to see what it is all about before you make that decision? These 5 tips will keep you from feeling like you aren't prepared for the adventure that awaits.
Tip #1 - Do your Research Before Hand
If you have a certain breed, size, or sex in mind, it pays to find out if there might be one available at the event you are headed to. You wouldn't go to a Lab Lover event if you are looking for a Toy Poodle. Check out what animals will be there so you can be sure to find a furry friend to love. Find a resource to get you the information you are most curious about. Most rescues will post on their website or social media what animals are coming with them to the event.
Tip #2 - Make Connections with other Adopters
Having a new animal is fun, but face it, it’s hard work. They have to get used to a whole new environment, you have to get used to knowing when they need to use the bathroom. It’s a learning experience for everyone. That’s ok though, there are a wealth of people in your community that love dogs as much as you do. Find a support system. Maybe they have been through the same problem you are going through or just know how to find Fluffy a great dog food. Plus, if you make a new human friend, you can take your dogs to the park to play together.
Tip #3 - Wear Comfy Clothes
You don’t want to be kneeling down in heels and a skirt. Wear something that lets you get down with the animals. A t-shirt, jeans and sneakers are perfect. You will get a little dirty, accept that fact. Animals shed, they have accidents and they drool. But hey, if they slobber on you, that means they like you!
Tip #4 - Jot Down a List
What are you going to need if you bring home a dog that day? Do you have a water bowl? How about toys? Most events have all kinds of great products available for sale that you can pick up there, just be sure to have a list handy of the items you need so you don’t forget to get Fido food.
Tip #5 - Bring a Tissue
Adoption events are great for connecting people and animals, but they are also emotional as well. Just accept that you will need a tissue (or a box of them) at some point.
A little preparation will save a lot of disappointment, anxiety, and let you really find the dog of your dreams. Any way you approach it, you are making a difference by choosing to adopt.
