Massachusetts State Parks Strive to Be Fido Friendly

Go Ahead, Smell the Roses

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation introduced new regulations in October 2014 in an effort to become more dog friendly.  Statements also indicated that they will continue to review parks over time to ensure any land that could be used by dogs and dog owners has policies to match.  More designated off-leash areas are also on their wish list.

While we personally have taken advantage of the wonderful off-leash areas, we are so excited to see them become more common - so we've emailed MassParksPaws@state.ma.us. for an update on where the initiative stands today.

MassParksPaws mission is to encourage responsible dog owners to become park stewards and partners. (Thanks for thinking for us!)

The parks do have a few simple guidelines to ensure everyone's safety. These rules are not just great for Mass parks, but they are also great practice for enjoying any park.  For example...

  • Dogs must wear current tags for license and rabies vaccine
  • No more than four dogs per person at one time (unless a commercial dog walker with permit)
  • Pick up after pets and dispose of waste
  • Dogs must be leashed in parking lots
  • Don't damage the land
  • Do not allow your dog to approach other dogs or people who may not desire contact
  • Keep dogs under effective control

What's your favorite spot?

We love Callahan State Park in Framingham for its clearly marked trails, designated off leash area and refreshing pond for the pups.  We've also had nothing but great experiences with the dogs and owners visiting.

Borderland State Park in Easton/Sharon is another favorite for its size and variety. There are 20 miles of trails that range in difficulty, six ponds and numerous activities available. Check out the old Ames mansion (where the new Ghostbusters was filmed!) and then try the 3 mile loop through old farm paths. Borderland does not disappoint.

We enjoy all that Mass State Parks have to offer and we hope you and your dogs do, too!
