“Preserving healing pet relationships for people in crisis”
A few weeks ago we sat down with Jordan Ross, Pets Empower founder, to learn more about his organization’s past, present and future. So get Fido fed and walked, peruse our discoveries and keep in touch! Follow Pets Empowered using the resources down below and be sure to say hi to Jordan at some Boston events.
The journey of creating Pets Empower began when Jordan and his beloved black lab, Jazz, found themselves in an unsafe situation at home which led to their displacement. Jordan spent a great deal of time searching for a solution that would allow for him to keep his four legged best friend. Parting with Jazz was not an option. He was shocked at the lack of resources he came across during this difficult time and saw a serious need not being met by any major non-profits. Jordan realized there was a need for increased visibility on the issue of keeping families with their pets during times of crisis. This could apply to victims of domestic abuse, natural disaster or healthcare issues. Too many pets arriving at shelters are the result of such events, much to the dismay of their owners. By his estimates, some 130 million Americans are at risk of losing their pet at any given time.
His grand vision of impact does not come without its struggles and obstacles, much like any other venture. Jordan said getting the organization started begins just like any other business but said he's in good company with the fellow entrepreneurs at Impact Hub Boston.
Pets Empower is unique in that it raises funds for organizations that all contribute to the cause of keeping pets with their owners during difficult times. This means less hands-on work with animals but more opportunities to volunteer from anywhere.
In hearing stories of crisis, many of us will feel grateful for our homes, our jobs and safe pets. In talking to Jordan, however, I had to imagine that very few people actually believe that they will find themselves in such a crisis or have a plan in place in case. I asked Jordan, "For those who are not facing difficulty now, do you have any tips for preventing it in the future? Likewise, any advice for those who feel they may have difficulty on the horizon?" Jordan replied,
"Self care is most important, prior to being able to care for pet."
While advice will be situational, it's important to have an ally to lean on in tough times. This can be a great friend, family member, therapist or other advocate. Having a "Plan B" regardless of your position can also reduce risk. When our own basic needs aren’t being met, it may be in our pets best interest to consider a long term foster or be open to something more permanent.
For those in need of short or long term assistance, the sooner you reach out to Pets Empower the better. This will give their team a chance to vet out the best possible environment for your pet and design a plan for your circumstances.
What's next for Pets Empower?
In the short-term, Pets Empower will continue attending dog industry events, work on their marketing campaign (including a very special campaign with Boston celebrities and their pets, can't wait!) and create a short, universal intake form that can be used nationally.
Additionally, the group plans on designing a co-op for pet owners, beginning in Boston, in which member trade pet-sitting duties for no charge (something we at VoR love the idea of).
As we look at the future of PE, Jordan plans on making an impact in NY next and continuing to head down the East coast.
Volunteer
Anyone with a desire to further the organization's mission is encouraged to reach out and learn more about how they can help. Contributions can vary greatly while having crucial impact. Jordan is currently focusing on building strong relationships with businesses and other organizations, while building a diverse team to handle logistical needs such as fundraising, blogging, web design, social media and data analysis (measuring impact).
Jordan has also developed strategic partnerships with veterinary schools, colleges and student groups so students can gain valuable experience in business skills, fundraising, non-profits and more while helping families stay together.
